Interestingly enough, we're considering the Purpose-Driven Church program from Saddleback as a springtime fellowship/education sort of program for our parish. It is the evangelical (and "infotainment" side of the program -- and price tag -- that we're finding most problematic.

We just completed the Purpose-Driven Church program a couple of weeks ago. We were pleasantly surprised. Even though it is in forty bite-size chapters, there are many good insights. One of things we did was go out to the CSU campus and interview people of all ages what they thought the purpose of life was. It was shocking how many people haven't even contemplated the question. The bottom line is that we should not confuse simplicity with lack of substance. As for the infotainment concern, the very first point made is that the purpose of life is not about you. On the evangelism front, Rick Warren focuses on making sure that evangelism is true to its etymological roots -- good news.

Interesting to read this, especially in light of recent evangelical attacks on the Pork Industry. See: http://swiftreport.blogs.com/news/2004/11/white_house_in_.html

I wonder how the Pork Industry lobbyist feels about that!
